Embracing Self-Care: A Neurodivergent Approach

I want to chat with you about something so important yet often overlooked: self-care. Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Who has time for that?” But pllllleeeasse trust me, carving out a little slice of self-care heaven can work wonders for both you and those around you.

As neurodivergent individuals, we often navigate the world in unique ways, and that includes how we approach self-care. So let’s shake off those conventional ideas and look at some adaptions for us neurodivergent folk that can truly make a difference.

  1. Embrace Sensory Breaks: Being attuned to sensory input is a superpower, but it can be incredibly draining. Give yourself permission to take sensory breaks throughout the day. Whether it’s stepping outside for some fresh air, listening to calming music, or indulging in a sensory-friendly activity like coloring or squishing a stress ball/dough/kinetic sand, find what soothes your senses and make it a regular part of your routine.
  2. Practice Mindful Movement: Traditional exercise routines might not be your cup of tea, and that’s okay! Instead, explore gentle movement practices like yoga or pilates. These activities not only benefit your physical health but also promote mindfulness and relaxation, helping you find balance amidst the chaos of our minds.
  3. Create a Sanctuary Space: Designate a cozy corner in your home as your personal sanctuary. Fill it with things that bring you joy and comfort – whether it’s soft blankets (I’m sure many of you have heard about my magic blanket), uplifting artwork, or a collection of your favorite books. Having a designated space where you can unwind and collect spoons can make a world of difference.
  4. Connect with Your Tribe: It’s easy to feel isolated, but you’re not alone in this wonderfully eclectic ND world. Reach out to others within your circle, either in the community or online who understand what you’re going through. Share your experiences, offer support, and celebrate victories together. Building this network can provide invaluable emotional support and validation.
  5. Nourish Your Mind and Body: Remember to nourish yourself both mentally and physically. This means fueling your body with nutritious foods that give you sustained energy ( like complex carbs and good fats), and don’t forget to stay hydrated. Set aside time, even if you only have 5 minutes, that bring you joy and fulfillment, whether it’s reading a good book, time on your current hyperfocus , or simply taking a bubble bath.
  6. Practice Self-Compassion: Finally, be gentle with yourself. You’re doing the best you can, and that deserves recognition. Please prioritise your needs and set boundaries when necessary. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish – it’s a vital component of being healthy and effective.

So there you have it, my fellow spicy brain fam – some neuroinclusive self-care tips , you deserve care and support. So take a deep breath, show yourself some love, and keep shining bright! You’ve got this. 💫
